Questions worth asking before you approve a repair
You do not need to be a mechanic to have a useful conversation about your vehicle. A few direct questions tell you a lot about a shop.
What is unsafe, what is urgent, and what can wait?
An honest answer separates the three. Not everything found during an inspection has to be done today, and a good shop will tell you which items are genuinely time sensitive.
How was this diagnosed?
Ask what testing led to the conclusion. 'The code said so' is a starting point; a description of what was measured is a diagnosis.
What does the estimate include?
Parts, labour, shop supplies and taxes should be visible before work starts. Ask whether the quote could change and under what circumstances.
What happens if the problem comes back?
Ask about the warranty on parts and labour, and who to call if something is not right. A shop that stands behind its work will answer without hesitating.
