How often should you really change your oil?

Start with the manufacturer schedule

Your owner's manual gives an interval for normal use and a shorter one for severe use. Following it protects both the engine and, on newer vehicles, the warranty.

Most Sudbury driving is 'severe'

Short trips where the engine never fully warms up, extended idling, cold starts and towing all count as severe service. Short winter trips are especially hard on oil because moisture and fuel do not burn off.

If most of your driving is a few kilometres at a time, use the shorter interval.

Check the level between changes

Some engines consume oil normally. Checking the level monthly costs nothing and catches a leak or consumption problem before it causes damage.
